I
was born and raised in Fort Smith, NWT, a small town on the Alberta border. My
first experience with soapstone was when I worked the Arctic Circle as a journeyman
painter in the seventies. I was amazed at what I could make out of soapstone.
I did not sell any of my artwork till I moved to Yellowknife in 1998. That was
a turning point for myself because there was such a demand for soapstone art that
I turned it into a full time hobby to support my family. I have sold my soapstone
artwork all over Canada and overseas. I like the challenge of carving because
when people order a certain thing it is never the same thing I have to create.

I
was born and raised in Fort Smith, NWT and although I haven't hunted or trapped
for many years the images of animals and survival are still within me. My family
had moved to Yellowknife in 1998 and I was then introduced to a challenge of art
through my husband, Gilbert Daniels, by becoming his polisher. I then took my
challenge to the next step and created a piece of soapstone art which gratified
my sense of well being. From that point becoming a self taught carver I engulfed
in many art shows throughout Alberta, BC and NWT and onward after seven to eight
years of carving. I can see many figures through the natural shape of the rock.
I enjoy challenges through soapstone and of my family support. |
